Toward the Prestigious Graduate School of Public Health in the 21st Century

The Graduate School of Public Health, accredited by the Ministry of Education, Republic of Korea January 24, 1977, has taken long strides as an institute for public health education since its foundation. The number of students was 20 at the time of foundation. Now it has 350 students out of whom 300 students are enrolled for the M.P.H. degree and 50 in the Health and Environmental Executive Program.

Their qualification is nationally in the highest level. What impresses me most with the faculty. These are only some of the changed aspects of the 23-year-old graduate school. And such development is due to the unlimited support and dedications that all the faculty, students and alumni have given together with the Christian spirit.

At the entrance of the 21st century, the world lies in the turbulent changes that can be summarized as globalization and information-oriented society. As for the health industry, its significance is emphasized more and more because of the increasing need for the healthy life, the changing disease patterns and the expansion of its related fields. As a result, the field of public health requires the unprecedented specialization and diversity in the 21st century.

Also, health care service is predicted to become top priority among the government policies in the near future and the demand of expert on the public health will be tremendously increased. Therefore, the role of the graduate school of health science and management should be redirected to produce many professionals in the various sections, who have the great vision for the future in the changing world.

We have set up the long-term development plan and carried it out step by step for our vision of becoming a world-renowned graduate school of public health by 2010. We aim to attain such function and position that the prestigious schools of public health in the United States and Europe have held in their society. In conclusion, as a leading educational institute for public health in Korea, we will continuously serve to enhance the national health system in the 2000's through the prevention of human diseases and injuries, the improvement of the environment, and the making of best health policy.
